KOOTENAYS – New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson says a new organic waste project between the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), City of Castlegar, and Town of Creston will help decrease greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs and produce compost for residents.
“People across the Kootenays want to do their part to address climate change, and organics collection is one piece of that puzzle,” said MLA Anderson. “This is an incredible partnership between the RDCK, Creston, and Castlegar to make reducing our emissions easier. I’m excited to see this coming together, and want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this possible.”
This new project, part of the BC NDP government’s CleanBC Organic Infrastructure and Collection Program, will receive $1.2 million from the province for a new food and yard waste collection service for over 14,500 homes.
Launched in 2020, the program is providing up to $25.9 million, over three years, to communities to develop or expand their ability to divert organic waste from landfills. Through cost-sharing arrangements, the funding recipients are contributing at least one-third of eligible project costs.
Investing in organic waste diversion is one part of a much bigger picture. CleanBC is the province’s pathway to a more prosperous, balanced and sustainable future. It supports our BC NDP government’s commitment to climate action to meet B.C.’s emission targets and build a cleaner, stronger economy for everyone.
